Sepulcral Tombstone sixth century BC

Son Peretó (Manacor, Mallorca)

This tombstone corresponds to a woman who had been buried at the Basilica´s ensemble of Son Peretó. We cannot say with certainty her age since researchers have still not come to an agreement, but it does seem she was of an advanced age for this period of time. On the other hand we do know she was an important person within the Christian community of the time, since it’s the only tombstone with a Latin inscription.

Transcription of the Tombstone:

BALERIA

FIDELIS IN

PACE VIXIT

ANNIS TRS

DE HAC VITA

SD II KAL OCTO

Translation:

Baléria loyal lived in peace (¿…?) Left this life day II from the October calendar.

The question about her age is a disputed affair, since the inscription presents an abbreviated numeral which is truly controversial. Different authors have proposed diverse possibilities: 26, 60, 70 o 73 years of age.
